The Neidhammel laughs derisively in front of the secondary school in Isny. It has a sarcastic origin, being a monument against envy.

The folks in this area are kind of envious of other people's success - no kidding. The artists who created this work is Leo Wirth.

Two successful brothers, literally 'Sons of Isny', grew up here. Their names were Karl and Jakob Immler, owners of some local hotels and other buildings. The Immler brothers financed the construction of the 'Realschule', or 'Secondary School' in an effort to give back to the community that they grew up in. The Immler brothers legacy was typical of self made successful people. With diligence, skill and a good nose for real estate, Karl and Jakob Immler have worked their way up to considerable prosperity as "self-made men". However, they learned that this filled their fellow citizens with a great deal of envy.

According to Oswald Langst, head of the main office of the school, the brothers led the school's construction it much faster and cheaper than the builders that would have been hired by the local municipality. Of course, this brought more envy from the locals, because the locals felt it was somehow "that the brothers were doing too well."

Then the brothers then wanted to initiate an 'envious mutton festival', at which a mutton would be roasted every year in order to symbolically and a little cunningly call for less resentment, they were again rejected. It was only when the school needed another wing that the Immler brothers were sheepishly (pun intended) turned to. But they had a different idea: they set up a "fool of envy" in front of the school, the artful head of which spits on the heads of symbolic figures that represent prosperity, love or contentment.

The sculpture is actually a small fountain which will spit once in a while. It is a ram's head on a human body.

A symbolic child is also part of the humor, as he is laughing at the jealous little mutton man.

This is a translation of an inscription on the base:

"Don't ask what your city can do for you,ask what you can do for your city. Peace is the absence of war and strife. Peace is a virtue, a state of mind, an inclination towards kindness, trust and justice Let's fight together every day again for freedom of expression - never again censorship."
