The town of Carnoustie lies in the county of Angus on the North Sea coast of Scotland. The town's war memorial can be found on the north side of the high street beyond a garden area. Designed by Dundee architect James Pain Bruce, it was unveiled by the Earl of Strathmore on October 31st 1925, with the rest garden in front completed on June 7th the following year.
The memorial takes the form of a curved wall enclosing a circular raised platform. A statue of a Highland soldier (modelled by Charles Crawford) stands on the top of the wall in its centre. The soldier stands over a cross and wreath. Five panels are contained within the wall, along with two plaques that were unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal on October 16th 2012, honouring the town's two Victorian Cross recipients, Lance Corporal Charles Jarvis & Petty Officer George MacKenzie Sampson. The central panel contains the following inscription:
'IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN SYMPATHY WITH THOSE WHO SUFFERED AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'
The remaining four panels, two on either side, give the names, rank and unit of the 142 men who fell.
