The Torre della Zecca was built after the devastating flood of 1333 to protect a bridge, the Ponte Reale, which was never built. Together with the Porta San Niccolò on the other side of the river it was an important part of the city’s defenses.

Early in the sixteenth century the tower had been lowered to it's present height of 25 meters, 82 feet. The tower served as a bastion in the Old Fort (Baluardo di Mongibello) to improve the city’s defenses after the Siege of Florence.

Beginning 2014 the Torre della Zecca was restored at a cost of 300,000€. It took 18 months to complete. The tower was re-opened in 2016.
