This medium-sized memorial cairn and a bench allow for an opportunity to sit down and soak in an amazing view, while learning about and remembering Conrad Kain, a famed mountaineer in this area.
The sign at the cairn reads as follows:
"Conrad Kain - Legendary Mountaineer of the Columbia Valley
From this viewpoint, you are looking into the heart
of the Purcell Ridge, where the loftiest peaks rise.
The distinctive Farnham Tower forms the northernmost rampart of the
range's highest peak, Mount Farnham (3457m). Both mountains were
first climbed by Conrad Kain and clients Albert and Bess McCarthy in 1904.
Conrad Kain (1885-1934) was an Austrian-born mountain guide, hired by The
Alpine Club of Canada, who lived in the nearby hamlet of Wilmet.
During his career he guided first ascents on many of the
Purcell Range's highest and most difficult peaks, including
the world famous Bugaboo Spire just north of the Farnham Group, and the
highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, Mount Robson.
Whenever he reached the summit of a previously unclimbed mountain, he built
a rock cairn, like the one beneath this plaque, leaving an astonishing legacy of 62
first ascents in Canada, 29 in New Zealand, and three in Corsica.
