Cette magnifique église d'un baroque dépouillé, date de 1800. En 1880, fut achevé l'actuel clocher en pierres de taille haut de 36 m. Elle trône sur la place du village avec sa tour-clocher séparée, un détail architectural propre à la Balagne.

This magnificent church of a stripped baroque, dates from 1800. In 1880, the present 36-meter high bell tower was completed. It stands on the village square with its separate bell tower, an architectural detail found on many churches in Balagne.Inside, a statue of the Virgin and Child from the 18th century and a statue of Saint Anthony the hermit from the 16th century, both in polychrome wood, were classified as MH in 1992.

Les cloches ont résonné avec entrain, ce mardi en fin d'après-midi, au-dessus de l'église Sainte-Marie de Lumio. Mais c'est pour écouter un autre son que les paroissiens sont venus en nombre. L'office, présidé par l'évêque de Corse Monseigneur François-Xavier Bustillo, s'annonçait historique et exceptionnel. De mémoire de Lumiais, l'orgue ne s'était plus fait entendre depuis le début du siècle dernier.
« Nous sommes réunis aujourd'hui pour un fait marquant de la sauvegarde du patrimoine de Lumio, en relation avec la pratique religieuse de notre église Sainte-Marie, où le rituel de baptême de l'orgue rénové va lui restituer sa vocation liturgique initiale. » Les mots d'Étienne Suzzoni, le maire de la commune, sont empreints d'une certaine satisfaction après la longue entreprise qui vient d'aboutir. Instrument gigantesque de plus de 600 jeux et tuyaux, il ne sait être restauré si facilement.

L'orgue de Lumio a été construit en 1831 par le Ligure Luiggi de Ferrari, tandis que la tribune est l'œuvre d'un ébéniste lumiais, Fabio Leca. L'instrument avait une utilisation régulière et a fait l'objet de menues réparations dont la dernière remonte à 1919. Vandalisé entre les deux guerres, l'orgue est depuis lors réduit au silence. Il faudra attendre septembre 2005 pour que, sur proposition du président de l'association Cercle d'études et de recherches historiques de Lumio, Robert Coletti, le projet de rénovation soit voté.
« Élue en 2014, notre équipe municipale faisant procéder à une étude préalable à la restauration de l'orgue par l'organiste Michel Colin, le préfet de Corse pouvait autoriser, en 2016, la commune, à effectuer les travaux d'un coût estimé à 333 000 €, poursuit Étienne Suzzoni. En 2018, l'appel d'offres était remporté par Romain Legros, originaire de Cassanu, facteur d'orgue, près de Vérone en Italie, ainsi que par Ewa Poli et Alice Quoirin pour les décors et les menuiseries. Ainsi, après plusieurs mois de travaux, la restitution de l'orgue marque aujourd'hui l'achèvement de notre projet. »
Le service patrimoine de la Collectivité de Corse a financé 70 % du montant des opérations. La souscription de donateurs, grâce au concours de la Fondation du patrimoine, a apporté 40 000 € au projet, soit 14 %, laissant la part communale brute à quelque 90 000 €.
Un rituel codé

L'orgue de Lumio a été démonté en janvier 2019 puis transporté dans la région de Vérone pour sa restauration. Il a retrouvé son église il y a quelques jours, avant une restitution initialement prévue le samedi 18 septembre, à l'occasion des Journées du patrimoine. La municipalité a finalement préféré attendre quelques jours de plus afin que l'évêque de Corse puisse être présent.
« J'ai 52 ans et c'est la toute première fois que j'inaugure un orgue, assure Monseigneur François-Xavier Bustillo. Nous venons de vivre un moment fort pour cette église, ses paroissiens, et tout le village. Il y a eu du monde ; j'ai été ravi de rencontrer ces personnes engagées, ces bénévoles, ces mécènes, ces gens qui y ont cru. Il est important que nous puissions croire en notre patrimoine, car il est fantastique. Cet orgue donne de l'âme à son église. »
L'instrument sacré ne saurait sonner sans la présence à demeure d'un organiste. Musicien de formation, Jean-Louis Horn est désormais le titulaire. « À la retraite, j'ai pris la décision, à la demande de certains prêtres, d'animer les messes aux orgues dans tout le secteur paroissial de la Balagne occidentale, explique-t-il. Il y a une bonne dizaine d'orgues dans la région, dont certaines vont aussi être restaurées. Bien que construit par le même facteur d'orgue que celui de Sainte-Marie, à Calvi, l'orgue de Lumio est totalement différent. Il a une ampleur, c'est-à-dire un coffre tout à fait extraordinaire. Je viens de le découvrir et comme l'acoustique de l'église est très bonne, c'est un véritable plaisir que d'en jouer. »

Le monstre de métal et de bois a craché ses premières notes selon un rituel très codé : « Éveille-toi, orgue, instrument sacré. Entonne la louange de Dieu, notre créateur et notre père », ordonne l'évêque à l'instrument, qui ne tarde pas à chanter ses plus belles notes. « Orgue, instrument sacré, célèbre Jésus, notre Seigneur, mort et ressuscité pour nous », poursuit le haut représentant de l'Église. Ou encore « Orgue, instrument sacré, soutiens la prière des chrétiens. »
Après un émouvant Diu vi salvi regina, entonné par les confrères de Lumio et de Lavatoghju, l'évêque de Corse a passé un long moment au contact des paroissiens : « Je suis toujours touché et ému de voir une église pleine. Il est beau qu'un peuple se retrouve et l'église est ce lieu de rassemblement, pour les fêtes, les mariages, les baptêmes et les enterrements. Il est important que l'évêque soit présent, puisse rencontrer les gens et leur dire ses encouragements à poursuivre la mission. Je suis disponible et prêt à bouger, car c'est merveilleux de pouvoir marcher avec les gens. »
La municipalité de Lumio prévoit, pour le printemps prochain, une manifestation culturelle rassemblant des organistes autour de l'instrument restauré. Une occasion de faire découvrir aux paroissiens son fonctionnement et ses secrets.
Jean-Louis Horn, l'organiste du village, espère que d'autres musiciens locaux l'auront rejoint d'ici là.
« Un organiste liturgique n'est pas un organiste de concert, précise-t-il. C'est quelqu'un qui vient tous les dimanches et accompagne la messe. Il a un vrai rôle social et je crois qu'il faut encourager des jeunes à rendre ce service quand ils le peuvent. »
La renaissance de l'orgue de Lumio ne fait encore que commencer.

In the memory of Lumiais, the organ had not been heard since the beginning of the last century.
"We are gathered here today for a milestone in the safeguarding of Lumio's heritage, in relation to the religious practice of our church of Sainte-Marie, where the ritual of naming the renovated organ will restore it to its original liturgical vocation." The words of Etienne Suzzoni, the mayor of the municipality, are imbued with a certain satisfaction after the long undertaking that has just been completed. A gigantic instrument with more than 600 stops and pipes, it cannot be restored so easily.

The organ of Lumio was built in 1831 by the Ligurian Luiggi de Ferrari, while the gallery is the work of a cabinetmaker from Lumio, Fabio Leca. The instrument was in regular use and was subject to minor repairs, the last one in 1919. Vandalized between the two wars, the organ has been silenced since then. It was not until September 2005 that, on the proposal of the president of the association Cercle d'études et de recherches historiques de Lumio, Robert Coletti, the renovation project was voted.
"Elected in 2014, our municipal team making a study prior to the restoration of the organ by the organist Michel Colin, the prefect of Corsica could authorize, in 2016, the municipality, to carry out the work of an estimated cost of 333,000 €, continues Etienne Suzzoni. A coded ritual

Lumio's organ was dismantled in January 2019 and then transported to the Verona area for restoration. It returned to its church a few days ago, before a restitution initially scheduled for Saturday, September 18, on the occasion of the Heritage Days. The municipality finally preferred to wait a few more days so that the bishop of Corsica could be present.
I am 52 years old and this is the very first time I have inaugurated an organ," said Bishop François-Xavier Bustillo. We have just lived a strong moment for this church, its parishioners, and the whole village. There were many people; I was delighted to meet these committed people, these volunteers, these patrons, these people who believed in it. It is important that we can believe in our heritage, because it is fantastic. This organ gives soul to its church.
The sacred instrument could not sound without the permanent presence of an organist. Jean-Louis Horn, a trained musician, is now the incumbent. When I retired, I decided, at the request of certain priests, to lead the organ masses in the entire parish sector of Western Balagne," he explains. There are a good dozen organs in the region, some of which will also be restored. Although built by the same organ builder as that of Sainte-Marie, in Calvi, the organ of Lumio is totally different. It has an extraordinary size, that is to say, an extraordinary chest. I have just discovered it and as the acoustics of the church are very good, it is a real pleasure to play it.

The monster of metal and wood spat out its first notes according to a very coded ritual: "Awake, organ, sacred instrument. Sing the praise of God, our creator and our father," the bishop commands the instrument, which soon begins to sing its most beautiful notes. "Organ, sacred instrument, celebrate Jesus, our Lord, who died and rose for us," the high representative of the Church continues. Or "Organ, sacred instrument, support the prayer of Christians.
After a moving Diu vi salvi regina, intoned by the confreres of Lumio and Lavatoghju, the Bishop of Corsica spent a long time in contact with the parishioners: "I am always touched and moved to see a full church. It is beautiful that a people comes together and the church is this place of gathering, for feasts, weddings, baptisms and funerals. It is important that the bishop is present, can meet the people and tell them his encouragement to continue the mission. I am available and ready to move, because it is wonderful to be able to walk with the people."
