The Snuneymuxw people call this island Saysutshun. However, in the mid-1800s the Hudson's Bay Company found coal deposits here and renamed it Newcastle after the coal mining community in England.
Today coal mining has long left Saysutshun and the island become a Canadian Pacific resort with people sailing from Nanaimo and Vancouver to picnic and spend time here.
Then it became a provincial park and is an incredible treasure for Nanaimo. With some 3.63 km2 (1.40 sq mi) of land, the park has historic relics from the coal mines and quarries. But to get here you can take a small ferry and walk or bike the island.
As to the view at Angle Point, it is an incredible vista across the Salish Sea to the Sunshine Coast.
