This crucifix and statues are located in the yard of Saint Brigid Catholic Church, on the corner of Arch and Liberty Streets in Meadville, Pennsylvania. They are on the east side of the church. Made of stone, the crucifix depicts Our Lord on the cross, surrounded by Saint John, Mary Magdalene, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The crucifix was built in 1949 when the church underwent extensive renovations. A plaque states that it is "Dedicated to the memory of all parish veterans."

Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh. He was born of the Virgin Mary nearly two thousand years ago in the city of Bethlehem. At about 30 years of age, Jesus began preaching, calling men to repentance and to love of God and neighbor. Within three years of his public ministry beginning, Jesus was arrested, scourged, and crucified. He died on the cross and was laid in a tomb. On the third day, however, He rose from the dead and began appearing to his disciples. He told them to go throughout the word preaching and baptizing. He ascended into heaven and Christians believe that those who believe in Him and follow His commandments will be saved when He comes again to judge the world.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated by Christians as the Mother of the Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. As a young girl betrothed to St. Joseph, Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would conceive a son by the Holy Ghost, who would be the Son of God. In humble obedience to the divine messenger, Mary replied, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word." In Bethlehem, her Son was born and was adored by shepherds and kings. As is known throughout the world, this Son, Jesus Christ, went on to suffer on the cross and rise again, offering salvation to the world through Him. Mary, who stood by the cross, is sometimes referred to as Our Mother of Sorrows. Today, Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and Queen of Heaven.

Saint John was one of Christ's twelve Apostles and the author of the fourth Gospel included in the New Testament. He was the "Beloved Disciple" who sat next to Christ at the Last Supper and stood by the cross during the crucifixion of Christ. It is believed that he outlived all of the other Apostles and was the only one not to die a martyrs death. Four books of the New Testament are attributed to him, including a Gospel, three Epistles, and the Apocalypse (Revelation). His feast day is celebrated on December 27th.

Saint Mary Magdalene was an early follower of Christ. The Gospels relate that Jesus had cast out seven demons from her. Mary stood by the cross with Saint John and the Blessed Mother as Our Lord suffered and died. After the crucifixion, Mary was the first person to see Jesus in his resurrected body. Her feast day is celebrated on July 22nd.
