The Emigrants Monument Utvandrarmonumentet stands at the beach promenade in the Hamnparken.
In the 1800s and early 1900s, about 1.3 million Swedes left Sweden and moved primarily to the United States. The journey went from the Swedish coastal towns by boat across the Atlantic. Several of the ships departed from Karlshamn. Emigration was at its peak in the years 1880-82 and 1887-88.

Poor economic conditions were the main reason why the emigrants left. The population had increased and it was difficult to produce enough food as there was a shortage of good agricultural land. This created famine and emigration increased.
In the United States, they were entitled to 65 acres of state-owned land provided it was cultivated. However, this stopped around 1890 and instead they became wage workers, earning more money than they could do in Sweden.
Who placed it?: Axel Olsson

When was it placed?: 1959

Who is honored?: More than 1 million Swedes who left their homeland between 1848 and 1930;
