DE: Am Kahlen Asten in der Nähe der Ortschaft Winterberg im Hochsauerlandkreis betreibt der Deutsche Wetterdienst eine Wetterstation. Diese blickt auf eine lange Tradition der Wetterbeobachtung zurück, denn bereits nach dem ersten Weltkrieg wurde im Jahr 1918 im Astenturm die erste Beobachtungsstation errichtet. Seit 1952 gehört die Bergwetterwarte mit der Nummer 10427 zur Regionalzentrale Essen und liefert seitdem kontinierlich Daten über das Wetter vor Ort.

Um 2006 wurden die ersten automatischen Datensammler in einem vor dem Astenturm gelegenen Klimagarten genannten Abschnitt installiert, Ende 2018 war die Automatisierung dann soweit abgeschlossen, dass auf permanente Besetzung des Astenturmes verzichtet werden konnte.

Auf dem 25m x 25m großen, eingezäunten Gelände befinden sich Geräte zur Messung

• der Temperaturen in verschiedenen Höhen (in und knapp über dem Boden als auch in höheren Abständen dazu),
• der Luftfeuchte,
• des Luftdruckes,
• der Sonnenscheindauer,
• der Niederschlagsmenge sowohl für Regen als auch für Schnee,
• der Windmenge und Richtung,
• der Schneehöhe,
• der Wolkenuntergrenze (basierend auf einer Lasermessung) sowie
• zur Messung von Radioaktivität in Luft und Niederschlag.

EN: The German weather service operates a weather station on Kahler Asten near the village of Winterberg in the Hochsauerland district. This station can look back on a long tradition of weather observation, as the first observation station was set up in the Astenturm in 1918 after the First World War. The mountain weather station with the number 10427 has belonged to the Essen regional center since 1952 and has been providing data on the local weather continuously since then.

Around 2006, the first automatic data collectors were installed in a section called the climate garden in front of the Astenturm. At the end of 2018, the automation was completed to the extent that permanent staffing of the Astenturm could be dispensed with.

There are measuring devices on the 25m x 25m fenced area for measuring

• of temperatures at different altitudes (at and just above the ground as well as at higher distances from it),
• the humidity,
• the air pressure,
• the sunshine duration,
• the amount of precipitation for both rain and snow,
• the amount and direction of the wind,
• the snow depth,
• the cloud base (based on a laser measurement) and
• to measure radioactivity in air and precipitation.
