Automobilisten die Rijswijk binnen- of uitrijden hebben vast eens de drie blauwe geometrische composities gezien van Rob Schmidt. Samen markeren zij het kruispunt aan de Haagweg, Herenstraat en de Geestbrugweg. In het bijzonder de voetgangerstunnel die onder de Haagweg ligt en de wijken Cromvliet, Leeuwendaal en Oud Rijswijk ondergronds verbindt.

Het kunstwerk is gemaakt in opdracht van gemeente Rijswijk en gefinancierd uit de percentageregeling. Deze regeling houdt in dat een klein deel van de begroting van een openbaar bouwwerk besteed moeten worden aan kunst. In dit geval was er sprake van de herinrichting van het kruispunt en de opening van de voetgangerstunnel in de jaren tachtig.

Om de aandacht van voetgangers te vestigen op de voetgangerstunnel, heeft de kunstenaar het ondergrondse naar boven willen halen. Lucht, die zowel ondergronds als bovengronds stroomt, is als uitgangspunt van zijn ontwerp genomen. De partjes lijken door de wonderlijke speling van de zwaartekracht luchtig van onder de grond naar boven te zweven. Samen vormen de partjes een waaiend dak van de voetgangerstunnel.

‘Het Wegvliegend Tunneldak’ past binnen de eerdere werken van Rob Schmidt. Schmidt maakt graag abstracte beelden die uitnodigen om aangeraakt te worden. Wel focust Schmidt nu vooral op (symbool)beelden, die in tegenstelling tot dit beeld, vaak vloeiend en rond zijn.

Motorists entering or leaving Rijswijk have probably seen the three blue geometric compositions by Rob Schmidt. Together they mark the intersection at Haagweg, Herenstraat and Geestbrugweg. In particular, the pedestrian tunnel that lies under the Haagweg and connects the Cromvliet, Leeuwendaal and Oud Rijswijk districts underground.

The artwork was commissioned by the municipality of Rijswijk and financed from the percentage scheme. This arrangement means that a small part of the budget of a public building must be spent on art. In this case, there was the redevelopment of the intersection and the opening of the pedestrian tunnel in the 1980s.

To draw the attention of pedestrians to the pedestrian tunnel, the artist wanted to bring the underground to the surface. Air, which flows both underground and above ground, was taken as the starting point for his design. Due to the wondrous play of gravity, the segments seem to float lightly from below the ground to the top. Together, the segments form a winding roof of the pedestrian tunnel.

‘The Away Tunnel Roof’ fits within the earlier works of Rob Schmidt. Schmidt likes to create abstract images that invite to be touched. However, Schmidt now mainly focuses on (symbol) images, which, in contrast to this image, are often smooth and round.
