Born Julius Henry Marx in 1890 to Jewish immigrants on Manhattan’s upper east side, the young Groucho began his performing career as part of a Vaudeville singing act along with his brothers. Known as the Three (or Four) Nightingales, the singing Marx brothers never achieved much success. When they began joking around with each other on stage between songs, they found that their comedy got better crowd reactions than their singing, so the rest as they say, is history.

The Marx Brother’s comedy routines involve each brother portraying a different character. Groucho’s character had bushy eyebrows, a mustache, glasses and a cigar. This appearance became Groucho’s shtick for the rest of his career.

Throughout the 1920s, the Marx Brothers’ stage shows were highly popular. By the end of that decade they had transitioned into films, the first few of which were based on their Broadway shows. Through the 30s and 40s, the Marx Brothers appeared in numerous feature films including “Animal Crackers,” “Monkey Business,” “Horse Feathers” and “Duck Soup.”

Groucho Marx was the only Marx brother to have a substantial solo career. He appeared in numerous films, as a guest on variety shows, in stage performances and, most notably, as the host of the long-running game show “You Bet Your Life,” both on radio and television. He maintained his quick wit and sense of humor right up until his death in 1977. His cremated remains were interred in Eden Memorial Park in the Mission Hills area of Los Angeles.

I noticed that someone had placed cigars in lieu of flowers at Groucho’s niche in Eden Memorial Park’s mausoleum. The cigar was a Dunhill ‘Phillies’ brand but Groucho’s preferred cigar was the Dunhill 410. I suppose the ‘Phillies’ are a reasonable substitute as the 410s haven’t been produced in many years.
