“Een monument in de vorm van een wereldbol, jarenlang stond dit in De Meern op een markante plek voor het toenmalige restaurant Rhenomare. Nu verdient het een mooie nieuwe plek, waar bewoners over kunnen meedenken.

Dat vindt althans Kees Koren, inwoner van De Meern. De Oranjevereniging van De Meern nam in 1995 het initiatief tot dit kunstwerk, dat 50 jaar einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog symboliseert. Er is destijds gecollecteerd om het te kunnen financieren, en werd op 5 mei 1995 geplaatst. Een wereldbol als bevijdingsmonument was natuurlijk logisch, want vrede over heel de wereld is het ideaal.

Het monument werd van zijn plek voor Rhenomare verwijderd toen de busbaan daar werd aangelegd. “Het lag tijdelijk in de opslag bij de gemeente, waar ik het tegenkwam. Nu staat het al weer een tijdje op het Schiemanterrein aan de Castellumlaan, het stuk braakliggend terrein in hartje De Meern”, aldus Kees Koren. Maar ook voor dit gebied zijn nieuwbouwplannen, dus moet het monument verhuizen. Kees Koren maakt zich nu (november 2017) hard voor een goede nieuwe plek voor de wereldbol.”

Dat moet helemaal gelukt zijn, want ik vond het monument nu terug op het Mereveldplein, voor het oude Rabobank-filiaal.

“A monument in the shape of a globe, for years this stood in De Meern in a striking place in front of the then restaurant Rhenomare. Now it deserves a beautiful new place, where residents can think about it.

At least that's what Kees Koren, resident of De Meern, thinks. The Orange Association of De Meern took the initiative in 1995 for this work of art, which symbolizes 50 years of the end of the Second World War. A collection was made at the time to finance it, and it was placed on May 5, 1995. A globe as a liberation monument was of course logical, because peace all over the world is the ideal.

The monument was removed from its site in front of Rhenomare when the bus lane was built there. “It was temporarily in storage at the municipality, where I came across it. It has now been on the Schiemanterrein on Castellumlaan for a while, the piece of wasteland in the heart of De Meern,” says Kees Koren. But there are also plans for new construction for this area, so the monument has to move. Kees Koren is now (November 2017) committed to a good new place for the globe.”

That must have been completely successful, because I now found the monument on Mereveldplein, in front of the old Rabobank branch. The actual continents are depicted on the globe in green.
