This distance/direction sign was installed by the US Coast Guard Point Security Unit (PSU) Detachment Delta at Guantanamo Bay to connect with other PSUs around the United States. The arrows for PSU 312 (San Francisco, California - 312° 2,707 NM) and PSU 309 (Port Clinton, Ohio - 343° 1356 NM) also have challenge coins for those units embedded on the back.
Although the Coast Guard no longer operates the lighthouse here, it still maintains a presence at Guantanamo Bay, conducting flight operations from Leeward Point Field and port security operations from the bay itself. Cutters and other craft that patrol the Caribbean also make frequent port calls at the base. A room inside the lighthouse museum is entirely dedicated to the history of US Coast Guard operations here at Guantanamo Bay.
Historic significance: This distance/direction sign was installed by the US Coast Guard Point Security Unit (PSU) Detachment Delta at Guantanamo Bay to connect with other PSUs around the United States. The lighthouse here was built in 1904 and operated by the Coast Guard until 1955.
Location nearest to where you live now: PSU 305 at Fort Eustis, 354° 1,039 NM, is now three hours from our place, but it used to be just down the street when we lived at Fort Eustis!
