Wachtberg ist eine Gemeinde im Süden des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises, südlich von Bonn an der Grenze zu Rheinland-Pfalz gelegen. Wachtberg besteht aus 13 kleineren und größeren Dörfern. Namensgeber der Gemeinde ist der 258 Meter hohe Wachtberg, dessen Gipfel zwischen Berkum und Villip liegt.

Direkt an diesem Gipfel liegt das Wachtberg-Ehrenmal, ein Denkmal zu Ehren der Opfer des Ersten Weltkrieges. Es wurde 1921 von der Bürgermeisterei Villip und dem Architekten Franz Brantzky errichtet. Es besteht aus 14 Steinbildern von Bildhauer Wilhelm Barutzky, die die Stationen des Kreuzwegs Jesus darstellen. Sie sind auf Säulen in einem großen Kreis angeordnet. 10 dieser Denkmäler repräsentieren jeweils eine Ortschaft der Gemeinde Wachtberg. Die Namen der im Krieg Gefallenen der jeweiligen Ortschaft sind auf den Säulen eingraviert. Die restlichen vier Kreuzwegstationen beinhalten passende Bibelzitate. Im Jahr 1959 wurden Gedenktafeln für die Gefallenen des Zweiten Weltkriegs von Bildhauer Hans Schweizer ergänzt. 1979 kamen weitere Tafeln für Opfer der restlichen drei Wachtberger Ortschaften Adendorf, Arzdorf und Fritzdorf hinzu.

Abgerundet wird das Ensemble durch eine kleine, offene Kapelle. Eine mächtige, kreisförmige Bruchsteinmauer umfaßt das Ehrenmal. Ein Torbogen mit Treppe bietet Zugang zum höhergelegenen Platz. In den Abendstunden wird es mit Strahleren beleuchtet.

Das Ehrenmal ist seit 1946 jedes Jahr an Christi Himmelfahrt Ziel der Sternprozession aus den Wachtberger Dörfern. Traditionell werden im Abschlussgottesdienst die Pferde gesegnet. Das Ehrenmal ist unter der Nummer "A 20" in der Baudenkmälerliste Wachtbergs eingetragen.

Wachtberg is a community in the south of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, south of Bonn on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. Wachtberg consists of 13 smaller and larger villages. The community is named after the 258 meter high mountain Wachtberg, whose summit is between Berkum and Villip.

The Wachtberg-Ehrenmal, a memorial in honor of the victims of the First World War, is located directly at this summit. It was built in 1921 by the mayor's office of Villip and the architect Franz Brantzky. It consists of 14 stone images by sculptor Wilhelm Barutzky depicting the Stations of the Cross of Jesus. They are arranged on pillars in a large circle. 10 of these monuments each represent a village in the community of Wachtberg. The names of those who died in the war in each village are engraved on the pillars. The remaining four Stations of the Cross contain appropriate quotations from the Bible. In 1959, memorial plaques for those who died in World War II were added by the sculptor Hans Schweizer. In 1979 further plaques were added with victims of the remaining three Wachtberg villages of Adendorf, Arzdorf and Fritzdorf.

The ensemble is rounded off by a small, open chapel. A mighty, circular quarry stone wall surrounds the memorial. An archway with stairs provides access to the higher site. In the evening hours it is illuminated with spotlights.

The memorial has been the destination of the star procession from the Wachtberg villages every year since 1946 on Ascension Day. Traditionally, the horses are blessed in the closing service. The memorial is listed under the number "A 20" in Wachtberg's list of monuments.
