De kruisweg van Jezus
De tocht die Jezus maakte van het paleis van Pilatus naar de heuvel Golgotha, staat bekend als de kruisweg. Net ter dood veroordeeld mocht hij zelf het kruis dragen waaraan hij op Golgotha zou sterven.
In de katholieke kerk is kruisweg ook de naam van een soort gebed waarbij men langs taferelen loopt die elk een moment uit de tocht tonen; de zgn. kruiswegstaties. Het woord statie komt van het Latijnse woord statio, "ik sta", en duidt op een plek waar stil werd gestaan - te vergelijken dus met station. Deze staties zijn sinds de 16e eeuw ook te zien langs de Via Dolorosa in Jeruzalem, een bekende route voor pelgrims.
De kruisweg vormt het sluitstuk van de passie: het lijden van Jezus, die met zijn dood de hele mensheid van haar zonden verlost, een centraal element in het christendom. De passie begint meestal met Jezus' voorspelling dat hij gekruisigd zal worden (Mattheüs 26:2) en omvat ook het Laatste avondmaal. In de Bijbel zelf staat weinig over de kruisweg, maar in de loop der eeuwen heeft de verbeelding haar werk gedaan. Er zijn dan ook talloze verschillende kruiswegen bedacht, met uiteenlopende aantallen staties, in verschillende volgordes. Tegenwoordig onderscheidt men doorgaans 14 staties.

The Way of the Cross of Jesus
The journey that Jesus made from Pilate's palace to the hill of Golgotha is known as the Stations of the Cross. Just sentenced to death, he was allowed to carry the cross on which he was to die on Golgotha himself.
In the Catholic Church, Stations of the Cross is also the name of a kind of prayer in which one walks past scenes that each show a moment in the journey; the so-called Stations of the Cross. The word station comes from the Latin word statio, 'I stand', and indicates a place where one stopped - comparable to a station. Since the 16th century, these stations have also been visible along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, a well-known route for pilgrims.
The Stations of the Cross form the closing part of the Passion: the suffering of Jesus, who with his death redeems all mankind from its sins, a central element in Christianity. The passion usually begins with Jesus' prediction that he will be crucified (Matthew 26:2) and includes the Last Supper. The Bible itself says little about the Stations of the Cross, but over the centuries the imagination has done its work. Countless different Stations of the Cross have been devised, with varying numbers of stations, in different orders. Nowadays, one usually distinguishes 14 stations.
