Rijnstraat 44. Wat heeft dit pandje te maken met smeltkaas en likeurtjes?
Bovenaan het prachtige pandje, Rijnstraat 44, prijkt het Romeins MDCCCXLV, vertaald naar getallen is dat 1845. Om meteen maar even korte metten daarmee te maken: waarschijnlijk klopt dat niet en moet dat MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888) zijn. Hoe dan ook, het pand is dus behoorlijk oud.
Het pandje, op de hoek van de Romeinsteeg, werd in 1888 gebouwd voor een meneer Hofman. Hij liet dat in neorenaissancestijl ontwerpen door architect Nicolaas Molenaar. Kenmerkend voor die stijl zijn bijvoorbeeld de trappetjesgevel en de ronde bogen, zoals die ene waaronder het Romeinse cijfer staat.

Eigenlijk hebben we het dus aan meneer Molenaar te danken dat het zo’n fraai pand is. En dat hij mooie dingen kan ontwerpen, konden we eigenlijk wel weten, want hij is onder andere ook de ontwerper van een van de eyecatchers van onze stad: de Bonaventurakerk.
Specifiek plan
Meneer Hofman had een specifiek plan met het pand aan de Rijn, hij ging er zijn likeurstokerij vestigen. Op de eerste verdieping van het pand zie je een kaal vlak onder de boog. Daar stond oorspronkelijk een woord, namelijk likeurfabriek.
Een paar meter verder omhoog zie je een soort huisje uitsteken. Het heeft misschien nog wel het meest weg van een vogelhuisje. Maar dat was het niet. Dit is een trijshuis, een fraaie manier om de takels te verbergen waarmee dingen naar boven moesten worden geheveld. Vlak daaronder zie je deurtjes, zowel op de tweede als de eerste verdieping, waardoor spullen naar binnen gehaald konden worden. Eigenlijk net als die mysterieuze deurtjes in de Bonaventurakerk , bijzonder hoog voor een stel deuren. Alhoewel het voor een pakhuis dan weer vrij logisch is, helemaal met een trijshuis erboven.

De familie Hofman had naast de likeurstokerij ook nog behoorlijk wat schepen in de vaart. Verklaart dat wellicht waarom er bovenop het pand een smeedijzeren boot prijkt?
Nadat Hofman uit het pand vertrok, kwam de volgende smakelijke gebruiker. Ook niet de minste. Want ene firma Ruys besloot het als kaaspakhuis te gebruiken. De persoon die die firma was gestart, was zelf een enorm kaasliefhebber en stond aan de wieg van beroemde smeltkazen: Goudkuipje. Jawel, de beroemde smeerkaas van de Eru. Die fabriek zit niet voor niets in Woerden… Het pandje Rijnstraat 44 heeft ooit een rol gespeeld in het groter worden van de Woerdense megabedrijf (waar we er overigens nog een aantal van hebben).
Wijntje?
Niet met zekerheid meer na te gaan (vooralsnog), maar de geruchten zijn dat er nog even een wijnpakhuis in het pand gezeten heeft. En uiteindelijk vestigde in 1968 een restaurant in het pand.
Zo smakelijk als het verleden van het pand is, is het dus nu nog steeds, want je kunt er nu dineren bij restaurant Oriental Parel. Mocht je plannen hebben om dat te doen, of je loopt gewoon over de Rijnstraat, kijk dan vooral even omhoog en geniet van dit prachtige pandje. De moeite waard.

Rijnstraat 44. What has this building to do with processed cheese and liqueurs?
At the top of this beautiful little building, Rijnstraat 44, is the Roman MDCCCXLV, which translates into numbers as 1845. Just to make things brief: this is probably not correct and should be MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888). Be that as it may, the building is quite old.
The building, on the corner of Romeinsteeg, was built in 1888 for a Mr Hofman. He had architect Nicolaas Molenaar design it in neo-Renaissance style. Characteristic features of this style are the stepped gable and the round arches, like the one under the Roman numeral.

We actually have Mr Molenaar to thank for the fact that this is such a beautiful building. And we should know that he can design beautiful things, because he is the designer of one of the eyecatchers of our city: the Bonaventura Church.
Specific plan
Mr Hofman had a specific plan for the building on the Rijn: he was going to establish his liqueur distillery there. On the first floor of the building you can see a bare area under the arch. That is where the word 'liqueur factory' originally stood.
A few metres further up, you can see a kind of house sticking out. It looks perhaps most like a birdhouse. But it was not. This is a trijshuis, a fancy way of hiding the hoists with which things had to be hoisted upwards. Just below it, on the second and first floors, you can see doors through which things could be taken inside. Just like the mysterious doors in the Bonaventura Church, very high for a pair of doors. Although it is quite logical for a warehouse, especially with a terraced house above it.

The Hofman family had quite a few ships besides the liqueur distillery. Maybe that explains why there is a wrought-iron boat on top of the building?
After Hofman left the premises, the next tasty user arrived. And not the least. A firm called Ruys decided to use it as a cheese warehouse. The person who started that company was a huge cheese lover himself and was at the cradle of the famous processed cheeses: Goudkuipje. Yes, the famous Eru spreadable cheese. The factory is not in Woerden for nothing... The premises at Rijnstraat 44 once played a role in the expansion of the Woerden mega-company (of which, by the way, we still have a few).
A glass of wine?
Not sure anymore (for now), but rumours are that there was a wine warehouse in the building for a while. And finally, in 1968, a restaurant was established in the building.
So as tasty as the building's past is, it is still there, because you can now dine at the Oriental Pearl restaurant. If you have plans to do so, or you are just walking down Rijnstraat, then look up and enjoy this beautiful building. It is worth the effort.
