Ruston of type 48DL. A total of 1127 locomotives of this type were built between January 1943 and April 1967.

Ruston & Hornsby Limited was formed in 1918 when Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd. of Lincoln acquired the firm of Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd. of Grantham. Both companies manufactured internal combustion engines and motor locomotives. Richard Hornsby built his first combustion engine locomotive as early as 1896. The first locomotive with an internal combustion engine from Ruston, Proctor & Co. was built in 1915. The engine ran on paraffin.
In 1931 Ruston & Hornsby designed their first locomotive. They were equipped with a four-stroke diesel engine of their own design with 1, 2, 3 or 4 cylinders. Each cylinder produced 10-12 hp.
This DL-series was a successful design. The locomotives are characterized by their great tractive power, speed, and smooth gear shifting. These locomotives were very suitable for long distances on narrow gauge railways.

Ruston's narrow gauge and standard gauge locomotives are undoubtedly the factory's best-known product. More than 300 were imported into the Netherlands after the war by importer Spoorijzer from Delft.
Ruston also built steam locomotives, steam tractors, and locomotive engines. They also manufactured cars and, together with the American company Bucyrus, draglines.
