Sigma Epsilon Alpha was founded at the University of Alabama in 1856 and is the only fraternity in existence today that dates from the antebellum South. The fraternity has chapters in all fifty states.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at the University of Kansas, established in 1903, was the first for this fraternity in the state, and is designated as the "Alpha" chapter. The seventy-five-year old building has been recently renovated and modernized, at a cost of about two and a half million dollars.
