Tegenover landgoed Schoonderlogt (privet property) staat een gloed nieuw monument voor de 101st Division, Screaming Eagles.
Hun acties hier in de omgeving werden bekend door de HBO serie "Band of Brothers"
Op het monument staat de beroemde foto van Richard (Dick) Winters.
Het monument bevind zich op openbaar terrein, het landgoed is prive terrein.
Hoeve Schonderlogt diende tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog tijdelijk als hoofdkwartier van de 101ste Airborne Divisie. De foto van de Amerikaanse officier Richard Winters, in 1944 poserend voor het poortgebouw, is wereldberoemd. In het Franse Normandië en Bastogne, waar de 101ste Airborne Divisie ook vocht tegen de Duitsers, staat al een monument ter ere van Winters en zijn mannen. Nu komt er dus een in Elst bij.
"Het monument ter ere van de Amerikaanse 101e Luchtlandingsdivisie, de Screaming Eagles werd op 1 oktober 2020 officieel onthuld bij Schoonderlogt.
Onder andere de ambassadeur van de Verenigde Staten in Nederland Pete Hoekstra en wethouder van de gemeente Overbetuwe Wijnte Hol waren hier bij aanwezig.
Het monument is voor de inzet van de Amerikaanse divisie in de Betuwe in het najaar van 1944 tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog. Het monument is tot stand gekomen ter ere van de 75-jarige Market Garden-herdenking door de samenwerkende partijen Betuws Oorlog Info Centrum, de gemeente Overbetuwe, de provincie Gelderland en Gelderland Herdenkt.
De Valburgse Sint Jacobusschool heeft het monument geadopteerd en er waren dan ook leerlingen aanwezig tijdens de plechtigheid.
BOIC
Al jaren brengt het BOIC in samenwerking met The Island 44-45 de regio tijdens de laatste wereldoorlog onder de aandacht, een 101st Divisionverhaal dat relatief onbekend is bij het grote publiek terwijl er zich zoveel heeft afgespeeld in deze cruciale periode. De 101e Divisie is in totaal bijna 2 maanden in de Betuwe operationeel aan het front verbleven alvorens men werd afgelost. Alleen al de 506e Parachute Infantry Regiment verloor 90 manschappen tijdens hun zware campagne in de Betuwe die met dit monument geëerd worden.
Men zet naast extra publiciteit en aandacht voor de historische plekken in de Betuwe ook in op erkenning voor wat deze fameuze Amerikaanse divisie, en met name de vermaarde 506e P.I.R. met daarin de bekende Easy Company, heeft gedaan en ondergaan voor onze bevrijding. Tot de verbeelding spreekt Easy Co’s leider, Kapitein Dick Winters, die destijds zijn hoofdkwartier ingericht had op landgoed Schoonderlogt.
Band of Brothers
Daarmee hebben Schoonderlogt en de Betuwe wereldwijde bekendheid gekregen door Steven Spielberg en Tom Hanks die met hun serie “Band of Brothers” een aflevering gewijd hebben aan de acties van Winters en zijn mannen. Zijn alom bekende foto waarop hij staand voor de poort van Schoonderlogt poseert is afgebeeld op de natuurstenen centrale plaat van het onthulde drieluik.
Dit hagelnieuwe stenen eerbetoon is opgericht in dezelfde stijl als van bestaande monumenten ter ere van deze divisie in Normandië, de Ardennen en Brabant en zal daarom uitstekend hierbij aansluiten tijdens de vele tours die langs de slagvelden worden georganiseerd."

Hoeve Schonderlogt temporarily served as the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division during the Second World War. The photo of the American officer Richard Winters, posing in front of the gatehouse in 1944, is world famous. In the French Normandy and Bastogne, where the 101st Airborne Division also fought against the Germans, there is already a monument in honor of Winters and his men. So now there is one in Elst.
The monument in honor of the American 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles was officially unveiled at Schoonderlogt on October 1, 2020.
Among others, the ambassador of the United States in the Netherlands Pete Hoekstra and alderman of the municipality of Overbetuwe Wijnte Hol were present.
The memorial is for the deployment of the American division in the Betuwe in the autumn of 1944 during the second world war. The monument was created in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Market Garden commemoration by the collaborating parties Betuws War Info Center, the municipality of Overbetuwe, the province of Gelderland and Gelderland Herdenkt.
The Valburgse Sint Jacobusschool has adopted the monument and students were present during the ceremony.
BOIC
For years now, the BOIC in partnership with The Island 44-45 has been highlighting the region during the last world war, a 101st Division story relatively unknown to the general public while so much has happened during this crucial period. The 101st Division spent a total of almost 2 months operationally at the front in the Betuwe before being relieved. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment alone lost 90 men during their heavy campaign in the Betuwe, who are honored with this monument.
In addition to extra publicity and attention for the historic sites in the Betuwe, there is also a focus on recognition for what this famous American division, and in particular the renowned 506th P.I.R. containing the well-known Easy Company, has done and undergone for our liberation. Easy Co's leader, Captain Dick Winters, appeals to the imagination, who had set up his headquarters at the Schoonderlogt estate at the time.
Band of Brothers
With this, Schoonderlogt and the Betuwe have gained worldwide fame through Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks who have devoted an episode to the actions of Winters and his men with their series “Band of Brothers”. His well-known photo in which he poses standing in front of the gate of Schoonderlogt is depicted on the natural stone central plate of the unveiled triptych.
This brand new stone tribute was erected in the same style as existing monuments in honor of this division in Normandy, the Ardennes and Brabant and will therefore fit in perfectly with the many tours organized along the battlefields."
