Nelson Mandela
"Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (IPA xo'li?a?a man'de?la; uitspraak in het Xhosa) (Mvezo, 18 juli 1918 – Johannesburg, 5 december 2013) was een Zuid-Afrikaans anti-apartheidsstrijder en politicus.
Vanaf 1944 was Mandela betrokken bij de strijd van het Afrikaans Nationaal Congres (ANC) tegen het apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika. Als leider van de militaire tak van het ANC werd hij in 1963 opgepakt en kreeg hij een levenslange gevangenisstraf opgelegd. In 1990 kwam hij vrij en werd het ANC gelegaliseerd. Samen met president F.W. de Klerk kreeg Mandela in 1993 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede voor "hun inspanningen voor het vreedzaam einde van het apartheidsregime en het leggen van de funderingen voor een nieuw democratisch Zuid-Afrika".
Bij de eerste vrije, niet-raciale verkiezingen in 1994 werd de op dat moment 75-jarige Mandela gekozen tot president van de Republiek Zuid-Afrika. In 1999 trad hij af. In Zuid-Afrika wordt hij beschouwd als de "vader des vaderlands". Zijn bijnaam was Madiba, de naam in zijn clan voor Thembu-koningen."

De Brug:
De Nelson Mandelabrug in Arnhem is een brug over de rivier de Nederrijn die de Arnhemse binnenstad en Arnhem-Noord via de Eldenseweg (voorheen onderdeel van de N225) verbindt met Arnhem-Zuid. De brug ligt aan de westkant van het centrum en wordt door veel Arnhemmers nog altijd de Nieuwe Rijnbrug genoemd, in tegenstelling tot de Oude Rijnbrug (de John Frostbrug) die oostelijk van het centrum is gelegen.[1] Tot 1987 heette de brug Roermondspleinbrug.
Door de groei van Arnhem op de zuidelijke oever van de Rijn kon de Oude Rijnbrug het toenemende verkeer tussen Arnhem-Noord en Arnhem-Zuid niet meer aan. Daarom werd in 1965 besloten tot de bouw van een tweede brug over de Rijn. Er werd gekozen voor de plek waar van 1603 tot 1936 de schipbrug Arnhem lag en na de oorlog een pontje voer, tussen het Roermondsplein en De Praets.
In 1968 verscheen het definitieve bouwrapport maar het duurde tot 1974 voordat de bouwopdracht was afgegeven. Op 18 december 1977 werd de Roermondspleinbrug in gebruik genomen. Door de aanleg van de brug waren aanpassingen nodig aan het Roermondsplein, Nieuwe Plein en Willemsplein. In 1987 werd de brug hernoemd naar Nelson Mandela. De Arnhemse beslissing om het gezicht van de anti-apartheidsbeweging in Zuid-Afrika te eren was in de jaren tachtig omstreden."
De brug bij avond
"Tijdens het evenement Sonsbeek '93 werd de brug een kunstobject. Rémy Zaugg plaatste op de zijkant van de brug in neonverlichting (in 2021 vervangen door ledverlichting[2]) in wit acrylglas de woorden HUIZEN - WIND - DE STROOM - DE VERTE - DE UTOPIE - INDONESIE - DE BOTEN - DE ZEE - BLAUWE LUCHT
Het kunstwerk zou voltooid worden op de John Frostbrug, maar dat riep zoveel emoties op dat het stadsbestuur daarvan afzag.[3]
In de nacht van 1 juli 2013 heeft een onbekende kunstenaar een portret van Nelson Mandela geschilderd op een van de brugpijlers op de zuidelijke rivieroever. Vanwege veel positieve berichten van burgers over dit kunstwerk, heeft de gemeente besloten om het portret niet te verwijderen. In 2016 begon de Giro d'Italia in Gelderland. In de 2e en 3e etappe van de Giro kwam het peloton over de Nelson Mandelabrug."

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (IPA xo'li?a?a man'de?la; Xhosa pronunciation) (July 18, 1918 – December 5, 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid fighter and politician.
From 1944, Mandela was involved in the struggle of the African National Congress (ANC) against the apartheid regime in South Africa. As the leader of the military branch of the ANC, he was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1990 he was released and the ANC was legalized. Along with President F.W. de Klerk, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for "their efforts to end the apartheid regime peacefully and lay the foundations for a new democratic South Africa".
In the first free, non-racial elections in 1994, the then 75-year-old Mandela was elected president of the Republic of South Africa. He resigned in 1999. In South Africa he is considered the "father of the country". His nickname was Madiba, the name in his clan for Thembu kings."

The bridge:
The Nelson Mandela Bridge in Arnhem is a bridge over the river Nederrijn that connects the Arnhem city center and Arnhem-North via the Eldenseweg (formerly part of the N225) to Arnhem-South. The bridge is located on the west side of the center and is still called the Nieuwe Rijnbrug by many Arnhem residents, in contrast to the Oude Rijnbrug (the John Frostbrug) which is located east of the center.[1] Until 1987, the bridge was called the Roermondsplein Bridge.
Due to the growth of Arnhem on the south bank of the Rhine, the Oude Rijnbrug could no longer handle the increasing traffic between Arnhem-North and Arnhem-South. It was therefore decided in 1965 to build a second bridge over the Rhine. The choice was made for the place where the Arnhem ship bridge was located from 1603 to 1936 and where a ferry sailed after the war, between Roermondsplein and De Praets.
The final building report was published in 1968, but it took until 1974 before the building order was issued. The Roermondsplein Bridge was inaugurated on December 18, 1977. Due to the construction of the bridge, adjustments were necessary to Roermondsplein, Nieuwe Plein and Willemsplein. In 1987 the bridge was renamed after Nelson Mandela. The Arnhem decision to honor the face of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa was controversial in the 1980s."
The bridge at night
"During the Sonsbeek '93 event, the bridge became an art object. Rémy Zaugg placed on the side of the bridge in neon lighting (replaced by LED lighting in 2021[2]) in white acrylic glass the words HOUSES - WIND - DE STROOM - DE VERTE - DE UTOPIA - INDONESIA - THE BOATS - THE SEA - BLUE SKY
The artwork was supposed to be completed on the John Frost Bridge, but that evoked so many emotions that the city council decided against it.[3]
On the night of July 1, 2013, an unknown artist painted a portrait of Nelson Mandela on one of the bridge piers on the south riverbank. Due to many positive reports from citizens about this work of art, the municipality has decided not to remove the portrait. In 2016 the Giro d'Italia started in Gelderland. In the 2nd and 3rd stage of the Giro, the peloton crossed the Nelson Mandela Bridge."
