Das LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern ist eines der größten Freilichtmuseen Europas und zeigt auf etwa 100 Hektar die Geschichte des Rheinlands. Dazu wurden rund 78 historische Häuser und Gebäude aus verschiedenen Regionen des Rheinlands abgetragen. Anschließend wurden sie anhand ihrer geographischen Herkunft zu Baugruppen zusammengestellt und hier wiederaufgebaut. Die ältesten Häuser stammen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die meisten sind aber aus der Preußenzeit (18. bis 19. Jahrhundert). Die meisten Gebäude sind begehbar, im Innern wird das alltägliche Leben aus der damaligen Zeit gezeigt.

Unter diesen Gebäuden sind auch zwei Windmühlen. Dies ist eine Bockwindmühle aus Spiel zwischen Düren und Mönchengladbach. Bockwindmühlen sind der älteste Windmühlentyp Europas. Sie stehen auf einem einzigen dicken Pfahl, der mittig unter dem Mühlenhaus in einem Holzgestell gehalten wird, dem sogenannten Bock. So dreht sich die gesamte Mühle automatisch mit der aktuellen Windrichtung.

Diese Windmühle wurde 1782 in Spiel gebaut, in ihre Einzelteile zerlegt und 1959 im Freilichtmuseum Kommern wiederaufgebaut. Sie war damit eines der ersten Gebäude im 1958 eröffneten Freilichtmuseum. Seitdem wurde sie mehrfach renoviert, unter anderem wurden die Flügel komplett ausgetauscht. Das Betreten der Mühle ist leider nicht möglich.

Bitte beachtet, dass ein Besuch der Windmühle nur mit einem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt im Museum zu den Öffnungszeiten möglich ist. Aktuell (2022) beträgt der Eintritt für Erwachsene 9,50 Euro.
The LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe and shows the history of the Rhineland on around 100 hectares. To do this, around 78 historic houses and buildings from various regions of the Rhineland were disassembled. They were then put together into small villages based on their geographic origin and rebuilt here. The oldest houses date from the 15th century, but most are from the Prussian period (18th to 19th centuries). Most of the buildings can be walked in, and everyday life from that time is shown inside.

Among these buildings are also two windmills. This is a post mill from Spiel between Düren and Mönchengladbach. Post mills are the oldest type of windmill in Europe. They stand on a single thick post, which is held in a wooden frame, the so-called trestle, in the middle under the mill house. In this way, the entire mill turns automatically with the current wind direction.

This windmill was built in Spiel in 1782, dismantled into its individual parts and rebuilt in 1959 in the open-air museum in Kommern. It was one of the first buildings in the open-air museum that opened in 1958. Since then it has been renovated several times, including the complete replacement of the wings. Unfortunately, entering the mill is not possible.

Please note that a visit to the windmill is only possible with a paid entry to the museum during opening hours. Currently (2022) the entrance fee for adults is 9.50 euros.
