"De beiaard van Oldenzaal hangt in de toren van de St. Plechelmusbasiliek. Deze toren werd omstreeks 1240 aan de westkant van de kerk gebouwd.
Pas sinds 1930 hangt er in de toren een volledig carillon, cadeau gegeven door de heer en mevrouw P.J. Gelderman-Bartelink bij gelegenheid van hun 12½-jarig huwelijk op 18 oktober 1928.
Tot de aanschaf van een beiaard werd definitief besloten toen ook een commissie van de Nederlandse Klokkenspel-Vereniging had vastgesteld dat de Plechelmustoren nagenoeg ideaal was voor de plaatsing van een beiaard en "een groot, modern klokkenspel kan bevatten, dat een prachtig verzadigd geluid naar buiten zou werpen." De bevindingen van de commissie werden in een adviesrapport aan de opdrachtgever gepresenteerd.
De beiaard van de St. Plechelmusbasiliek telt 48 klokken. In 1929 goten de Engelse gieters Gillett & Johnston 42 klokken. In 1949 kwamen daar 3 basklokken bij en in 1965 nog eens 2 kleine klokjes. De grootste klok, genaamd 'Maria', werd in 1493 gegoten door de klokken- en geschutsgieter Geert van Wou uit Kampen.
Nadat de klokken vanuit Engeland naar Nederland waren verscheept kon Eijsbouts uit Asten met de inrichting van het instrument beginnen. Voor de inwoners van de stad was het uiteraard heel bijzonder dat na eeuwen voortaan klokkenmuziek uit hun toren zou klinken. Vlak voor de officiële ingebruikname verscheen daarom een extra uitgave van 'Nieuws van de week' van de Oldenzaalse uitgever J. Verhaag. In deze krant legt Dr. J. Casparie, destijds voorzitter van de Nederlandse Klokkenspel-Vereniging, uit wat een beiaard precies is en waarom juist de toren van de basiliek zo geschikt is als klokkentoren.
Na alle plechtigheden werd de beiaard uiteindelijk om 18.00 uur feestelijk ingespeeld door Toon van Balkom, stadsbeiaardier van 's-Hertogenbosch. Hij speelde allereerst het 'Wilhelmus'. Voor een tweede concert was Maurice Lannoy uit het Franse St.-Amand-les-Eaux naar Oldenzaal gekomen. De volgende dag, in die jaren Koninginnedag, werden de klokken nog tweemaal een uur lang bespeeld door Joh. W. Meyll uit Nijkerk.
ijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog waren de klokken niet te horen. De beiaard is in die jaren bewust niet bespeeld, opdat niemand zou horen dat er zich klokken in de toren bevonden. Bovendien waren de klokken vanwege de gesloten toren van buitenaf niet zichtbaar. De beiaard is mede daardoor voor de klokkenvordering gespaard gebleven. Zowel Enschede als Almelo zijn hun beiaarden helaas wel kwijt geraakt.
Klik op foto voor vergrotingIn 1949 werd herdacht dat Oldenzaal 900 jaar geleden marktrechten en 700 jaar geleden stadsrechten had gekregen. Ter gelegenheid van deze eeuwfeesten stelden H.P. Gelderman en Zonen geld beschikbaar om het carillon uit te breiden met drie basklokken. Door Koninklijke Eijsbouts uit Asten werden toen nog eens drie basklokken gegoten. Het bleek toen tevens goed uitvoerbaar de zware (iets te hoge) Van Wou-klok tot een zuivere C1 bij te stemmen, waardoor de basis van de beiaard van Es1 naar C1 kon worden verlaagd.
Tijdens herstellingen aan de inrichting van het carillon in 1965 brachten twee nieuwe discantklokjes van dezelfde schenker het totaal op 48 klokken. De nieuwste door Eijsbouts gegoten klokjes kregen de namen 'Karel' en 'Dora' (naar stadsbeiaardier Karel Borghuis en zijn vrouw Dora Stuldreher). Oldenzaal bezit een fraaie en veel gewaardeerde concertbeiaard."

Oldenzaal's carillon hangs in the tower of the St. Plechelmus Basilica. This tower was built around 1240 on the west side of the church.

After all the ceremonies, the carillon was finally festively played at 6 pm by Toon van Balkom, city carillonneur of 's-Hertogenbosch. He first played the 'Wilhelmus'. Maurice Lannoy had come to Oldenzaal from the French town of St.-Amand-les-Eaux for a second concert. The next day, Queen's Day in those years, the bells were played by Joh. W. Meyll from Nijkerk.
During the Second World War, the bells could not be heard. The carillon was deliberately not played in those years, so that no one would hear that there were bells in the tower. In addition, due to the closed tower, the bells were not visible from the outside. Partly because of this, the carillon was spared from the bells claim. Unfortunately, both Enschede and Almelo have lost their carillons.

During repairs to the interior of the carillon in 1965, two new treble bells from the same donor brought the total to 48 bells. The newest bells cast by Eijsbouts were given the names 'Karel' and 'Dora' (after city carillonneur Karel Borghuis and his wife Dora Stuldreher). Oldenzaal owns a beautiful and much appreciated concert carillon.
