On Oct. 22, 1887 the deed shows the first parcel of land was deeded to the trustees of St. Matthews Methodist Episcopal Church. St. Matthews UMC held its first service in the new sanctuary on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.

"On Oct. 22, 1887 the available deed shows the first parcel of land was deeded to the
trustees of St. Matthews Methodist Episcopal Church. The deed states that John T. Gross,
Joseph Matthews, William Bill Nick, James Boyd, and Edward Dennis were trustees. The
land was purchased from James and Mary Jane Thompson. Other records indicate that the
original property was owned by John and Rachael Brown Nick
Trusting in the Lord
throughout this process, St. Matthews UMC held its first service in the new sanctuary on
Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.
The final phase of the building process took form in October 2016, under the leadership of
Rev. Marvin R. Wamble (2016 to present), the 32nd pastor of St. Matthews, when the
parking lot was paved and painted. With every phase completed, the building continues.
New ideas for ministries and community outreach are springing forward. The congregation
continues to serve and give, taking hold of its new vision – “Engaging, Impacting and
Transforming” our church and community"
