The Butler brothers - Claude, Wally, Tom, and Eric - started extracting gravel from this location in the 1940s. It continues to operate today as part Butler Brothers Supplies, along with other gravel pits in Sooke and Duncan.

The Keating pit can supply a number of different types of small aggregate and sand, primarily used in concrete and other construction. They supply washed aggregate, as well as crushed.

While currently still active, Butler Brothers estimates the Keating pit will be exhausted somewhere around 2025 to 2027, depending on demand.

As of now, the operations can be viewed from a few areas, which may change as the extraction areas vary.
