Tegenover het Kadaster-kantoor in Apeldoorn, in het Catharina Amaliapark, staan 4 stenen met daarin ‘RD’ gegraveerd. RD staat hierbij voor Rijksdriehoeksmeting. Deze granieten RD-stenen stonden vroeger in Vriezenveen, Ubach over Worms, Haaksbergen en Otterlo. Ze werden gebruikt als meetpunt van de Rijksdriehoeksmeting.

Landmeters gebruiken RD-punten met de door ons berekende coördinaten als referentie. Hiermee kunnen cartografen nauwkeurige kaarten maken en kunnen gebruikers de informatie uit verschillende kaarten goed combineren. In 1885 kreeg de Rijkscommissie voor Graadmeting en Waterpassing de opdracht voor het uitvoeren van de Rijksdriehoeksmeting. Het beheer van de RD-punten ligt sinds 1930 bij het Kadaster. Daarmee is de afdeling Rijksdriehoeksmeting van het Kadaster verantwoordelijk voor het Nederlandse coördinatensysteem.

Door het hele land zijn vanaf het einde van de 19e eeuw ruim 6.000 RD-punten ingemeten. Vaak werd de locatie hiervan gemarkeerd door de spits van hoge gebouwen, zoals kerktorens. In gebieden zonder hoge gebouwen of waar deze niet goed te zien waren, werden RD-stenen geplaatst. Dit was bijvoorbeeld het geval op de Veluwe en in het heuvellandschap van Zuid-Limburg.

Om de precieze coördinaten van een RD-steen te kunnen bepalen, werd boven de steen tijdelijk een hoge houten meettoren gebouwd. Hierdoor konden landmeters boven de bomen uitkijken. Met een theodoliet (hoekmeetinstrument) konden zij de richtingen meten naar omliggende hoge meetpunten, zoals kerktorens. Onder de steen werd een tegel als extra verzekering geplaatst.

Het gemarkeerde kruis in de steen werd loodrecht boven een kruis in de tegel geplaatst. Raakte de steen uit het lood of verdween deze? Dan kon deze of een nieuwe steen weer loodrecht boven de tegel worden geplaatst. Het meetpunt hoefde niet helemaal opnieuw te worden ingemeten. Dit was namelijk een tijdrovende en dus kostbare zaak.

Op dit moment zijn er in Nederland nog ruim 450 van deze stenen. Vanaf eind 20e eeuw zijn er daarnaast RD-punten gemarkeerd met onder andere stalen grondankers op plekken die beter geschikt waren voor metingen met moderne meetapparatuur.

Landmeters gebruiken tegenwoordig ontvangers voor GPS- en andere navigatiesatellieten. Ook hiervoor hebben zij referentiepunten nodig, waar het Kadaster de coördinaten van berekent. Deze nieuwe referentiepunten zijn meetstations met een stalen antennemast. Het Kadaster beheert ruim 40 van zulke stations. Door een correctiedienst op basis van de data van referentiestations kunnen landmeters efficiënt en op de centimeter nauwkeurig meten met GPS. Af en toe gebruiken landmeters nog een RD-steen of grondanker om te controleren of hun apparatuur goed werkt.

Opposite the Land Registry office in Apeldoorn, in the Catharina Amaliapark, are 4 stones with 'RD' engraved in them. RD stands for National Triangle Measurement. These granite RD stones used to be in Vriezenveen, Ubach over Worms, Haaksbergen and Otterlo. They were used as a measuring point for the National Triangulation Survey.

Surveyors use RD points with our calculated coordinates as reference. It allows cartographers to create accurate maps and allows users to properly combine the information from different maps. In 1885, the National Commission for Level Measurement and Leveling was commissioned to carry out the National Triangulation Survey. The management of the RD points has been with the Land Registry since 1930. This means that the National Triangulation Department of the Land Registry is responsible for the Dutch coordinate system.

More than 6,000 RD points have been measured throughout the country since the end of the 19th century. The location of this was often marked by the spire of tall buildings, such as church towers. In areas without tall buildings or where they were difficult to see, RD bricks were placed. This was the case, for example, in the Veluwe and in the hilly landscape of South Limburg.

In order to be able to determine the precise coordinates of an RD stone, a high wooden measuring tower was temporarily built above the stone. This allowed surveyors to see above the trees. With a theodolite (angle measuring instrument) they could measure the directions to surrounding high measuring points, such as church towers. A tile was placed under the stone as extra insurance.

The marked cross in the stone was placed perpendicularly above a cross in the tile. Did the stone get out of alignment or did it disappear? Then this or a new stone could be placed again perpendicularly above the tile. The measuring point did not have to be measured all over again. This was a time-consuming and therefore expensive matter.

There are currently more than 450 of these stones in the Netherlands. From the end of the 20th century, RD points have also been marked with, among other things, steel ground anchors in places that were better suited for measurements with modern measuring equipment.

Surveyors today use receivers for GPS and other navigation satellites. They also need reference points for this, from which the Land Registry calculates the coordinates. These new reference points are measuring stations with a steel antenna mast. Kadaster manages more than 40 such stations. A correction service based on the data from reference stations allows surveyors to measure efficiently and with centimeter accuracy using GPS. Occasionally, surveyors use another RD rock or ground anchor to check that their equipment is working properly.
