Cargese

Cargèse is a commune located in the departmental district of Corse-du-Sud. On October 17, 2017, the village became part of the Community of Municipalities Spelunca-Liamone, via a prefectoral decree.

History
1676. About 700 Greeks from the village of Vitylo decide to flee their land, chased by the Turks. The Republic of Genoa, which ruled Corsica at the time, allowed them to find refuge in Paomia, a few kilometers from the current location of Cargese.

The Greeks were however welcomed with distrust by the islanders who saw in them the allies of a regime that they had never really recognized.

The first half of the 18th century marked the beginning of the revolt of the Corsicans against the Republic of Genoa.

Refusing to betray their benefactors, the Greeks had to take refuge in the tower of Umigna then in Ajaccio in order to escape the hostility of the villagers.

One century after the departure of Vitylo, the count of Marbeuf, governor of the island which had become French, allowed the Greeks to settle in a village on the western coast of Corsica.

Its name: Cargèse.

In 1990, a twinning is born between the Corsican village and Vitylo.

The XIXth century is translated on its side by the construction of two churches in Cargese: the Greek church Saint-Spyridon as well as the Latin church of the Assumption. Guardians and reflections of the history of the village, they contemplate each other in a silent harmony that only the steps of the amazed travelers come to move.

Location
The village of Cargese is located on the Punta di Carghjese, at an altitude of about 100 meters, between the northern end of the Gulf of Sagone and the small Gulf of Peru.

It is dominated by the bell towers of its two remarkable Catholic churches, of Eastern and Latin rites.

Located 50 km from Ajaccio, its current territory was part of the pieve of Paomia. In 2017, Cargèse had 1325 inhabitants, a figure that is constantly increasing.
