German entrepreneur Hermann Nieweler originally established the club as the "Dixieland Inn" at the Bastion Inn on Government Street in 1981. After the club's popularity grew, it moved to its new, dedicated location on View Street in 1986 and was renamed Hermann's Jazz Club.
In 2000, a fire set on the roof of the building by a suspected arsonist caused significant water damage to the club. Hermann personally spent $1.5 million to restore the club, acting as the contractor himself while also receiving treatment for prostate cancer.
Hermann would eventually succumb to cancer in 2015, and the next few years saw the club embroiled in a battle between family members. The club was taken over by the non-profit Arts on View Society in 2019, and the club continues to operate today.
Just a few of the performers who have graced the stage at Hermann's include John Hammond, David Gogo, Jane Bunnett, and Hugh Fraser. In her earlier years, Diana Krall was a frequent performer, and Wynton Marsalis once dropped by for an impromptu jam session.
