This statue of former student athlete and subsequent coach and athletic director of Notre Dame, Ed “Moose” Krause, sits outside of the Joyce Center where his office was located for many years. The congenial Mr. Krause won’t mind if you sit next to him and share your concerns about whatever’s on your mind.

The 6’3” 200 lb. Krause lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track as a student at Notre Dame in the early 1930s. As a center on the basketball team, his presence under the boards was so dominant that the 3-second rule was invented to give opponents a chance. After graduating, he coached for a couple of other schools before returning to Notre Dame to serve as coach and athletic director of the University. Once, when he was both athletic director and coach of the basketball team, he fired himself as coach because, in is words, the team “needed a change.”

And “Moose” enjoyed his cigars and cocktails. It’s said that even after smoking was banned in the arena, you could still see white smoke billowing from the press box where Krause sat. And although he gave up drinking (Krause became a spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous) he still has a cigar in his hand. I tried to help “Moose” out by relighting his cigar but without much success.
