NL In het Dinobos (Dinobos) in Dierenpark Amersfoort vind je de Centrosaurus direct na de twee eetstalletjes aan de rechterkant van het grote pad dat naar het schildpaddenhuis leidt.

De eerste overblijfselen van Centrosaurus werden ontdekt en benoemd door paleontoloog Lawrence Lambe in lagen langs de Red Deer River in Alberta, Canada. De naam Centrosaurus betekent "puntige hagedis" en verwijst naar de reeks kleine horzels die langs de rand van hun franje zijn geplaatst, niet naar de neushoorns (die onbekend waren toen de dinosaurus werd genoemd). Het geslacht is niet te verwarren met de stegosaurus Kentrosaurus, waarvan de naam is afgeleid van hetzelfde Griekse woord.

Later werden enorme botten van Centrosaurus gevonden in Dinosaur Provincial Park, ook in Alberta. Sommige van deze bedden strekken zich uit over honderden meters en bevatten duizenden individuen van alle leeftijden en alle niveaus van voltooiing. Wetenschappers hebben gespeculeerd dat de hoge dichtheid en het aantal individuen zou worden verklaard als ze waren omgekomen terwijl ze probeerden een overstroomde rivier over te steken. Een ontdekking van duizenden Centrosaurus-fossielen in de buurt van de stad Hilda, Alberta, wordt beschouwd als het grootste bed van dinosaurusbotten dat ooit is ontdekt. Het gebied staat nu bekend als het mega-bottenbed van Hilda.

De massieve lichamen van Centrosaurus werden gedragen door gedrongen ledematen, hoewel ze met een hoogte van 5,5 meter en 2,5 ton (5500 lb) geen bijzonder grote dinosaurussen waren. Net als andere centrosaurines droeg Centrosaurus enkele grote hoorns over hun neus. Deze hoorns zijn naar voren of naar achteren gebogen, afhankelijk van het exemplaar. Schedelversieringen werden verminderd naarmate de dieren ouder werden. De kraag was relatief kort in vergelijking met de totale schedellengte en kon bij de oudste en grootste volwassenen meer dan een halve meter (68,8 cm) lang worden.

Centrosaurus onderscheidt zich door twee grote hooorntjesdie over de kraag naar voren haken. Een paar kleine naar boven gerichte hoorns wordt ook boven de ogen gevonden. De franjes van Centrosaurus waren matig lang, met vrij grote fenestrae en kleine hoorntjes langs de buitenranden.

The first Centrosaurus remains were discovered and named by paleontologist Lawrence Lambe in strata along the Red Deer River in Alberta, Canada. The name Centrosaurus means "pointed lizard" and refers to the series of small hornlets placed along the margin of their frills, not to the nasal horns (which were unknown when the dinosaur was named). The genus is not to be confused with the stegosaur Kentrosaurus, the name of which is derived from the same Greek word.

Later, vast bonebeds of Centrosaurus were found in Dinosaur Provincial Park, also in Alberta. Some of these beds extend for hundreds of meters and contain thousands of individuals of all ages and all levels of completion. Scientists have speculated that the high density and number of individuals would be explained if they had perished while trying to cross a flooded river. A discovery of thousands of Centrosaurus fossils near the town of Hilda, Alberta, is believed to be the largest bed of dinosaur bones ever discovered. The area is now known as the Hilda mega-bonebed.

Like other centrosaurines, Centrosaurus bore single large horns over their noses. These horns curved forwards or backwards depending on the specimen. Skull ornamentation was reduced as animals aged. The frill was relatively short compared to the total skull length, and could grow to over half a meter (68.8 cm) long in the oldest and largest adults.

Centrosaurus is distinguished by having two large hornlets which hook forwards over the frill. A pair of small upwards directed horns is also found over the eyes. The frills of Centrosaurus were moderately long, with fairly large fenestrae and small hornlets along the outer edges.
