Completed in 1931 with full Art Deco embellishments, Union Station in Omaha, Nebraska, quickly became one of the busiest train stations in the Midwest. At its peak during the mid-1940s, over 10,000 passengers per day passed through Union Station on seven different railroad lines. But with the advent of the Interstate highways and increasing air travel, rail passenger service began to decline. Throughout the 1960s, one railroad after another discontinued service through Omaha until Union Station finally closed its doors for good in 1971.

The building now houses the Durham Museum, dedicated to preserving the history of the region through permanent and traveling exhibits. The Great Hall has been completely restored to its original splendor and is officially named the Suzanne and Walter Scott Great Hall. Reminiscent of the days when the Great Hall was full of passengers and railroad personnel, six groupings of bronze statues representing travelers, porters and other station patrons have been placed throughout the main waiting room. They are the work of local sculptor John Lajba.
