Early om July 2, 1861, Union forces under Maj. Gen. Robert Patterson crossed the Potomac River from MD to march on Martinsburg. Alerted to the enemy's movements by Stuart's cavalry, Col. Thomas Jackson fought a masterly delaying action that led Patterson to overestimate enemy strength, slowed the Union advance, and let Confederates retreat and reinforce for battle at Bull Run.
