The original Springfield National Cemetery (Union)was beginning to fill. Just to the south of the National Cemetery is the Confederate Veterans' Cemetery. There was a deed restriction that only Confederate Veterans could be buried here. The Missouri Daughters' of Confederate Veterans signed papers in 1983 removing the deed restriction and allow the 485 unused spaces to be occupied by veterans of any war. The bronze plaque on the reverse of the Monument reads:

August 10, 1984
This tablet is dedicated by the
Veterans Administration in grateful
Appreciation to the United
Daughters of the Confederacy
Missouri Division, for actions taken
To remove deed restrictions on 485
Unoccupied Confederate sites
In Springfield National Cemetery
Gravesites for use by all veterans
And their dependents serves as a
Symbol of reunification of purpose
For memorializing those who have
Honorably served this great nation
Without regard to past differences
In Confederate and Union alike

Dedicated on this anniversary of The Battle of Wilson's Creek
Aug. 10, 1861
