A role that requires heavy makeup and no spoken lines (Frankenstein's monster) seems perfect for a bow-legged actor with a lisp and a stuttering problem, but Boris Karloff also starred in many films with speaking parts and only the obligatory amount of makeup. But it was his roles as the monster in ‘Frankenstein’ and as ‘The Mummy’ and their many sequels that cemented his place in the annals of the horror movie genre, right up there with Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price.

Boris Karloff (real name: William Henry Pratt) was born in England of mixed English and Indian descent. Both of his parents worked for the Indian Civil Service and although he considered a career in the consular services (his brother, John Thomas Pratt, did go on to become a noted diplomat) he chose to pursue acting instead. Karloff’s career spanned over fifty years and besides his appearances in horror and other movies, he performed on stage, on radio and television and produced some spoken word recordings. He also narrated the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Karloff died in 1969 from complications due to emphysema. His cremated remains were buried in the rose garden at the Guilford Crematorium in Godalming, Sussex, England. There is just a small plaque noting the location.
