This pub sign shows a beaver chewing through a tree and in the background the beaver's dam can be seen and presumably the tree will be added to this.

The pub sign seems a strange scene for a large urban town, but it actually points to how the town got its name.
There are various theories about the town's name, but this pub sign relates to the belief that town name was given in the 10th century and refers to a beaver-clearing or beaver-lake; a reference to the colonies of beavers in the nearby River Hull at the time.
In addition the coat of arms of the town have a beaver at the top of a shield.
The first reference to the pub was in a trade directory of 1790 when it was called the Wheatsheaf. There is also a reference to the pub becoming named The Beavewr in 1901 after the John Smiths Breewery undertook alterations to the pub.
