The Emergency Department Building at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital was named after Thomas J. O'Neill. Mr. O’Neill made provisions in his will for financing the construction of a private, non-profit hospital. Opened in 1968.

"Since being founded as a Catholic hospital in 1968, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital has been dedicated to providing easily accessible, quality health care to the communities of northeast Baltimore.
Initially focused on rehabilitation services, we still are recognized for this expertise and are currently building a new, premier rehabilitation facility. We also have expanded, offering other services, including cancer care, emergency medicine, geriatrics, interventional radiology, wound healing, and more. THE PERSON

"April 1919 Local merchant and philanthropist Thomas J. O'Neill dies suddenly of a heart condition. In his will, he bequeaths money for the construction of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, as well as a hospital. He requested that the hospital not be named after him, so the name 'Good Samaritan' was chosen in his honor.
1962 In one of his first major acts after being ordained Archbishop of Baltimore, Cardinal Shehan initiates plans to begin construction of MedStar Good Samaritan as a Catholic Hospital."
