Inscription on the plaque;

Dr. Agnes Douglas Craine

Born October 9, 1861 in Smiths Falls Ontario

The first woman from Smiths Falls to attend university, Agnes graduated from Queen's University medical school with honours. Post Graduation she attended the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Edinburg and the faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

With triple qualifications, she returned home to Smiths Falls in 1889 to open her practice here at 2 Bay Street. She was perhaps the best educated woman in Ontario, better than any of her male
counterpart in Smiths Falls.

Dr. Craine struggled in her professional career as a woman physician in Smiths Falls, contending withy chauvinistic male jealousies permeating society at that time.

Dr. Craine was a role model for women in Smiths Falls, helping them to wage war of domestic subversion. She died alone in 1937, to the very end, defiant toward her treatment in her native town. The assumption that a woman should remain in the home finally started to turn in the 1940's only a few years after her death.

Inscription sur la plaque:

Dre Agnes Douglas Craine
