Plaque on the former Townhead Inn, now a private residence, Eyam.
The pub is said to date from the 1660's, although the earliest record is in William Wood's 1859 publication The History and Antiquities of Eyam (p.184). It was operated by a Mr. George Thorpe, who is recorded as a beer seller in the village in 1831, quite possibly operating from the same building.
The pub was still in operation in 1894 when it was leased to John Smith's of Tadcaster for the sum of £25 per annum, so may very well have still been a John Smith's house when a Thomas Bowers was there in 1901.
The plaque reads -
TOWNHEAD
INN
The inn was built in the
1660s.
In the 18th century the
packhorse drovers carrying
silk from the Townhead
factory to mills in
Macclesfield stayed here.
