The highway US 281 cuts through the Texas Hill County area and has expanded to keep pace with the growth of the Texas towns north of San Antonio, TX. One of these expanding towns is Spring Branch, TX, found between Bulverde to its south and Blanco to its north.
The grandfather of Herman Knibbe was the founder of the town of Spring Branch and the Knibbe family owned and operated a large ranching enterprise and commercial businesses in this area of the Texas. Their successful enterprises made significant contributions toward establishing Spring Branch, TX as a permanent Texas town.
In 1936, possibly as a gesture toward celebrating the 100th anniversary of Texas, Herman Knibbe, Sr. donated this plot of land that runs next to US 281 to be used "for park purposes." This strip of land is still being used as a roadside park. There is a pull over lane to park the car and some concrete picnic benches shaded by large oak trees.
In recognition to the positive influence the Knibbe family has had on the local community, and to acknowledge their gift of land for a roadside park, the Texas Highway Department had placed a concrete pad with a concrete pillar on top of which is fastened a metal plaque commemorating the donation of land by the Knibbe family.
The text of the plaque reads as follows:
