Founded in 1909, Sitka was a "water stop" on the AT&SF railroad. The town grew around the railroad depot, the grain elevator, and the Sitka Social Club, once a hub of social activity. Improvements in train propulsion eliminated the need for the "water stop" and eventually the railroad itself ceased to be; the rails were pulled for recycling long ago and the depot itself was moved to Dodge City, where it is on display. Sitka lost its Post Office in 1964 and all that remain today is the grain elevator, a metal building nearby, the remains of the Sitka Social Club building, a few homes, and many ruins.
