The Room of the Last Supper, also known as the Upper Room or the Cenacle in latin, is sacred to the Christians and the lower level of the building is the traditional burial site of King David which is sacred to the Jews.

The building has been occupied by Jews, Christians and Muslims over the centuries. Historians have found it difficult to establish a chronology of the occupations.

The Room of the Last Supper is bare and has no furnishings, but has Gothic style pillars. The ceiling arches into a dome. Remnants of the mosque are clearly visible when we enter the room.

The bronze sculpture of a tree in a corner of the room was given as a gift by Pope John Paul II. It is a three-trunked olive tree symbolizing peace between the three religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The sculpture also includes a vine and wheat shaft representing the wine and bread eaten by Jesus and his disciples at the Last Supper.
