Smith Garden has an extensive collection of plants in its botanic garden. This Dawn Redwood is located on the lawn just east of the Lanning Fountain.
This majestic tree with fernlike leaves was thought to be extinct until Chinese botanists discovered a small grove in China’s Szechwan Province in 1941. This tree was planted, in 1948, from seeds collected from those trees in China. It is recognized by the National Arborist Association as worthy of preservation and as one of the largest Dawn Redwood tree New England. It was relocated to its current site in 1964.
A sign next to the tree is inscribed:
