This fine courthouse was constructed in 1888. The central clock tower and elaborate mansard roof were destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1929, and were replaced by a flat roof. In 1965 the courthouse was modernized; the remains of the old roof were replaced so that the courthouse appeared to be a rather plain Art Deco building. A 2006 grant allowed the courthouse to be restored to its original Second Empire design, restoring the clock tower and roofline. The original cornerstone is still in place.

The black and white photo of the original courthouse is from the Fannin County Courthouse Restoration Facebook page. The date on which the photo was taken is unknown. A vehicle barely visible in the background might be a 1920s era automobile, or possibly a buggy.

The color photo of the Art Deco phase of the courthouse is from the Texas Courthouse Trail web site.
Year photo was taken: 1920
