The building presents a great homogeneity in its construction. The work was done at the end of the 15th century and beginning of the 16th and corresponds to the Gothic-Renaissance hybrid style typical of the time.

Its construction began on May 24, 1485, the same year of the conquest of the City, by order of the Catholic Monarchs, on the mosque that was in the Arrabal Alto, near the Torre de las Ochavas. It was the work of the collations of the city, endowed with twelve caballerias of land.

It was completed twenty years later (around 1505) and was consecrated under the invocation of the Holy Spirit in commemoration of the day the city was taken, Easter of the Holy Spirit. It did not rise to parochial status until the last years of Bishop César Diario.

For some time it served as the main church, while some works were being completed in Santa María.

In the middle of the 19th century, it was intended to add this parish to that of Santa María to increase the parishioners of the latter, but the residents of the Espiritu Santo neighborhood and those of San Francisco refused, alleging that they were isolated areas from the rest of the population. and that to reach Santa María they had to cross the ruins of the castle, an uncomfortable and dangerous thing. The commission in charge of studying the case decided that it would remain as an independent parish.
