The observatory was largely funded by the Rotary Clubs of Campbelltown and Koshigaya, the city's Japanese sister city.

It has a mission to continue the optical search for ETI and to engage with the extensive field of Indigenous astronomy. There are many public engagement nights and the public are invited to view the stars every few weeks in winter months.

The MacArthur Astronomical Society is a considerable support for the use of the observatory
