The original St. John’s Episcopal Church was built in 1841 in Hartford, CT near the present Christ Church Cathedral. In 1907 architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue was commissioned to build a new St. John's Episcopal Church at the present site. Construction began that year and two years later on June 9, 1909 the church building was consecrated. The expansion to include a parish house was also designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, which was built between 1914 an 1915.
A set of steps leads up to the front of the stone block St. John’s Episcopal Church. The façade, which projects outward from the gable roof, has a large red double door framed within a Gothic arch. Above the door is a two story high Gothic stained glass window, now protected on the outside by a screen.
The sides of the church has six pairs of Gothic style clerestory windows above a one bay deep projection below a slanted roof. The east side is five bays deep with a projecting gable end with an auxiliary entrance at the third bay rectangular windows at the other bays. The west side of the church has an arcade at the third bay connecting it to the Parish House. In between is a cloister. At the the back of the main block is a tall, square bell tower with large half louvered Gothic windows on each side. Wings with gable ends with Gothic windows project from the lower part of the bell tower.
