The highest-grossing "straight" play on Broadway – as opposed to a musical – is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, written by Jack Thorne from a story conceived by Thorne, J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany (all UK). The two-part play, which picks up the story of the Boy Wizard in his adulthood, has sold 1,324,815 tickets across 783 performances (and 34 previews) at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway and grossed $174,056,581 (£133,350,000) in its lifetime up to 8 March 2020.
The production began previews at the Palace Theatre in London's West End on 7 June 2016 (opening on 30 July 2016) and transferred to Broadway's Lyric Theatre on 16 March 2018 (opening on 22 April 2018). The play begins 19 years after the events in the Harry Potter book series and recounts the experiences of his son, Albus Severus Potter, as he starts at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A critical and commercial success, Cursed Child registered the highest all-time weekly box-office gross of any play on Broadway by earning $2,525,850 ($1,938,040) for the week ending 30 December 2018."
