Tedi was founded by the Tengelmann-Gruppe with the idea of offering the concept of 1-Dollar stores in Germany. After its introduction in 2002, the Euro was used as the basic unit. Almost all products cost 1 Euro or multiples thereof. Surcharges of 50 cents were also applied. The company was founded as an offshoot of the Tengelmann textile subsidiary KiK and built up by the discount specialist Michael Spies. Through KiK, Tengelmann and KiK managing director Stefan Heinig are shareholders in the company. Tengelmann owns 30 percent of the shares. On April 30, 2021, Tengelmann's shares will be sold to Christian Haub's H.H. Unternehmensgruppe.

Tedi stores are preferably located near other stores in the Tengelmann Group. An important target group is passers-by who happen to walk by and are held up by the display. Therefore, many branches are located in shopping malls and the center of smaller towns."
