Sigulda medieval castle ruins are located on a hilltop on the edge of the Gauja valley. The castle is naturally protected from attackers by high, steep slopes. The original castle was built in 1207.
During the Livonian War 1558–1582, the castle was damaged for the first time. The castle has a history that tells of repeated destruction and repeated repairs.
In-depth research and renovation of Sigulda Castle began in 1962. Based on source material, measurements of walls and archaeological excavations, the ruins have been renovated and several wooden structures have been built on them. The reconstruction of parts of the castle was completed in 2012. The castle is now open to the public.
