The brown-brick and slightly buttressed tall Bell Tower is set to the southern corner of Christchurch church. Each of the four sides at the top where the bells are suspended as two arched openings. Then there is a slat-covered highly peaked spire atop. Either side of the gothic-arched entry to the Bell Tower are two gilt-filled black marble tablets with the left-hand one declaring:

The War Memorial
Tower

A Thanks Offering for Peace

While the right-hand one declares

LEST WE FORGET
Below are the insignias of the three arms of the Australian Military.

Inside the gated and locked Bell Tower are multiple memorial tablets. One large black marble tablet with gilt infill is of 'Christ Church and The Great War', which explains the origin of Christchurch, from inception in 1899, to design in 1919, construction in 1926 and its dedication in 1927. The first bell being lifted into the Tower in 1935.

"In November 2017, the Tower was dedicated as The War Memorial Tower - a thank offering for peace. The five bells installed in the Tower in 2018 completed the peal of six bells and were dedicated as 'The Peace Bells'." [ex-plaque]

From the link below, the original lone bell of 1935 weighed in at 748kg, and came from Europe. The Peace Bells of 11 November 2018 were dedicated by Archbishop Aspinall.

[But, nothing beats the full peals of the former St Andrews (Uniting) Presbyterian church the other side of Maryborough Street - now Seventh-day Adventist, when they are rung on Thursday mornings!!]
