The Centennial Podium -- Legislative Building, SK CAN - Signs of History on Waymarking.com

This amazing stone podium, which also houses a Time Capsule, stands in the first floor vestibule in the main entry to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, Regina SK CAN. As this is a public building, anyone may enter. Those who would like to see the rest of the building need to take the guided tour, which leaves every few minutes.

The podium is next to a sign that reads as follows:

"The Centennial Podium

Renowned Saskatoon architectural stonemason and sculptor Robert Assie has created the Centennial Podium to honor the Centennial of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

The design of the Centennial Podium pays homage to the building and cornerstone ceremony on October 8, 1909. The ceremony was not only one of the first events the building hosted; it was also one of the largest. Citizens from across the province rallied in their best outfits to cheer on a new provincial capital building that would rival that of any other.

The Legislative Building became the symbol of a new province and the spirit of the people who lived here. That vision and spirit that the Legislative Building represents has lived on for over a hundred years. In 2012, in the Centennial year of the Legislative Building, we celebrate the people and everything the Legislative Building represents.

Inside the cornerstone made of Tyndall stone, was a copper time capsule that had been deposited by then Governor General Earl Gray. Within the time capsule were documents that included plans of the building, newspapers, a telephone book and other items that told the story of the province and pointed out the direction it was heading.

On December 8, 2011, the cornerstone was open to reveal the time capsule for the first time in over a hundred years. Premier Brad Wall and former Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart were on hand to offer a first glimpse of the contents of the capsule.

Assie has created the Centennial Podium by hand-carving three blocks of Tyndall stone to represent the cornerstone and reflect the growth of the province. It features a Saskatchewan coat of arms and a hollow portion of stone that is capstone sealed to house the original time capsule.

The Centennial podium has been placed near the cornerstone and overlooks where the new Time Capsule will be placed for a future generation to discover.

Robert Assie’s formal education in stone carving and sculptor began in Weymouth, England. He continued his studies and carving at L’Abbey de St. Antione in France under Master Carver Claude Chevenement. Currently he is a Carver and educator at Gisela stone carvers in Saskatoon. Rob was born near St. Brieux Saskatchewan and now lives in Saskatoon."
